Description
Shop owner Sako (last name withheld for privacy reasons), on the ladder, and a friend (whose name is withheld for privacy) work together to repair a shutter outside his shop that was severely damaged in the massive explosion of ammonium nitrate in Beirut, Lebanon, in August 2020. Sako's family started the business in 1940 and he is a third generation owner. Sako sustained severe injuries on his face and neck from the explosion. This photo was taken by MCC partner Forum for Development, Culture and Dialogue (FDCD) as part of an assessment of damages that took place after the explosion. FDCD helped Sako to rebuild the business.
The assessment phase is part of a project funded by MCC that will assist 55 families affected by the Beirut blast, including reconstruction of homes and businesses, and provision of psychosocial support for individuals and groups. The project aims to help families earn a livelihood and have safe housing in Beirut, and to address short-term and long-term psychological needs of residents experiencing trauma.
