Four MCC SALT alumni participated in the CSCS Climate Ride: (left to right) Loren Friesen, Caleb Schrock-Hurst, Liz Miller and Greta Lapp Klassen. They pause for a photo in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. upon arriving on July 28, 2021.
Greta Lapp Klassen (right) lives in Goshen, Indiana and says that if she hadn’t served with MCC's SALT program in South America, she wouldn’t have experienced climate change firsthand so intensely. She says, “Going to places where entire communities and cultures were displaced [due to climate change] was a huge awakening for me.”
A core team of 18 bicyclists made their way from Seattle, Washington, to Washington, D.C. The team began riding on May 31, 2021 and covered nearly 4,000 miles, learning about the impacts of climate change on different communities along the way.
They shared what they have learned through the riders’ blogs, social media and town halls with people across the country. The riders drew attention to climate change resources on the web site of the ride organizer, the Center for Sustainable Climate Solutions (CSCS)—a partnership between MCC, Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) and Goshen College.
Climate Riders were fully vaccinated at the time of their trip and followed the CDC guidelines that were in place in June and July 2021. Riders made sure to wear masks and maintain social distance indoors when interacting with people outside their group.
