Mohammed Asirmo (67) and Rashid Mohammed (10) and the goats they received from the Association (APDA) Goat Restocking Project. This project targets two communities in the Afar region of Ethiopia that were severely affected by the onset of drought from 2012 onward. The situation has been especially acute over the past two years, when many households lost all or most of their goats to hunger and illness. Pastoralists rely on their goat herds for food and milk as well as income, and the devastation of the herds left many households unable to support their families. This project, carried out through MCC partner Afar Pastoralist Development Association (APDA) will provide 470 households in the kebeles of Daboore and Namma Gubi with goats. Each household will receive 10 breeding goats (9 female and one male), as well as short term food for the goats as needed. The project runs from September 2015 to June 2016.
The project is funded from MCC's account at Canadian Foodgrains Bank.
