Description
Former enemies, Lukula Sadiki (left), chief of Bangwe-I'amba-Makobola villages, and Nene Ramazani, the leader of a fishermen's cooperative in I'amba, South Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), shake hands in the fall of October 2020. The handshake indicates that the peace agreement mediated by women peacemakers with MCC's partner Oasis de la Culture (Oasis of Culture) remains in effect two years after the men almost caused a riot in I'amba. The conflict was over a fish tax the chief was collecting that the fishermen's cooperative thought was excessive.
Oasis of Culture is a women's peacebuilding organization. Oasis has established 15 Women’s Situation Room with 300 members throughout DR Congo’s war-torn South Kivu Province. Volunteers in the Women's Situation Room are trained to diffuse tense situations and resolve conflicts between individuals and groups. Mulanda Jimmy Juma, representative for MCC in DR Congo, introduced the concept of Women’s Situation Room during a peace training he organized for the Church of Christ in Congo (ECC) in 2017.
