Description
Dr. Ela Jael Castro and her mother, Domicila Castro, prepare to distribute medication on Dec. 9 to people who were injured or ill following Hurricane Iota and Eta. Patients needing medication, provided by MCC, to treat blisters and cuts, leptospiros (a blood disease) and other ailments visited them outside Iglesia Vida in Abundacia, a Mennonite Church in Chamelecón, a suburb of San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Dr. Castro served with Young Anabaptist Mennonite Exchange Network (YAMEN), a program of MCC and Mennonite World Conference from 2019-2020 at Migrant House in Guatemala.
MCC provided funds for the medication to treat injuries and illnesses that were incurred during the aftermath and clean up of the double hurricanes, which devastated parts of Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua in November 2020. The category 4 hurricanes and subsequent tropical storms brought up to 1 meter/3.3 feet of rain to the worst affected areas, causing significant flooding and landslides that affected over 7.3 million people in the region.
*YAMEN (Young Anabaptist Mennonite Exchange Network) is a cross-cultural experience for young adults supported jointly by MCC and Mennonite World Conference.
