Description
Anna Johari Etabo (left) and Mateso Kangeta Edwige (right) talk about peacebuilding in the South Kivu province of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo).
Etabo helped to diffuse violence and broker a peace deal in a town about to erupt in violence over a conflict between the town chief and the village fisherman. Edwige helped to resolve a conflict between two young women over an insult. The conflict almost disrupted an entire school and almost went to court. Edwige kept going to visit the women, sharing her story and talking with them until they were able to forgive each other and end the conflict.
Oasis de la Culture (Oasis of Culture), an MCC partner, organizes Women’s Situation Rooms in 13 communities in South Kivu Province. Groups from the Women’s Situation Rooms train women to work for peace. Those women educate their communities on the benefits of peace instead of violence and the need for women to be safe and respected instead of sexually assaulted. The women also learn to resolve conflicts in the community and build their own self sufficiency by strengthening their financial independence. MCC has helped to train female leaders of the Women’s Situation Rooms, especially in conflict resolution and peacebuilding. In 2020, MCC will support four mills that women will use to support the work of the Women’s Situation Rooms and to create money for microloans.
