Description
Elements of the simple "Mama Kits" provided by ROM to at risk mothers in Mbuya, Kampala, Uganda. These are the items that mothers must bring with them to the government hospital to deliver there. Purchasing these items is often a barrier to women safely giving birth in a facility, despite a cost of only about $5.50 USD. The kit contains soap, disinfectant, laundry soap, gloves, gauze, cotton pads, umbilical cord tie off, razor, plastic sheets, and cotton cloth.
Project Summary
ROM's maternal and child health project works with vulnerable mothers in the informal urban neighborhood of Mbuya, often referred to as a slum. Mothers in this community often lack access to basic health and nutrition. Simple barriers like transportation costs or the lack of money to buy medical supplies keep women from accessing desperately needed care for themselves and their children. The project supports comprehensive antenatal and postnatal care visits, antenatal ultrasounds, transportation assistance, “mama kits’ to facilitate access to facility-assisted delivery, and linkages to HIV and other related medical services if needed for over 100 mothers per year.
