Description
Mary Ilero, 30, holds dresses that she has sewn as part of her seamstress business at the family’s farm outside of Soroti City, Uganda. The APED program has helped her with income generation.
Personal/Project impact
Ilero was able to turn the one pig and its piglets she received from APED into ongoing opportunities to make more money, including sewing, making peanut butter, buying a cow.
With the proceeds from two litters of piglets, Ilero bought a sewing machine and lessons to learn how to sew. She now sews custom-made dresses and men’s clothing, typically about one a week. She can also sew clothing for her own family.
Now she has enough money to buy more nutritious food, small gifts for her husband, Christmas gifts and pay tuition. Also, she and her husband reconciled after training on conflict resolution from APED. Now they are a team in supporting their family.
Project Summary
The main goal of Action for Peace and Development (APED) Uganda is to contribute to improved socio-economic wellbeing of 200 vulnerable youth in the Teso region through initiatives which increase agricultural production and productivity in Atiira Sub County in Serere District and Soroti Sub County in Soroti District, northeastern Uganda.
