Description
Christine Longoli demonstrates how she creates planting basins then she intercrops corn with beans on her farm in Kachapangole, Uganda.
Personal/Project impact
Christine Longoli has learned to cut down growth from last year’s crop, but she allows it to stay on the ground as ground cover and compost, protecting the moisture in the soil.
Through DADO’s training on conservation agriculture and how to preserve their harvest, Christine and her husband are getting more yield than they did using traditional measures. When rains are inconsistent, they can still feed their family because they have learned to plant vegetables that can be irrigated. She’s also learned to plant a variety of crops, so if drought affects one crop, it may not affect another. As members of the community savings group, she also has been able to borrow funds they need to cover school fees, clothing and transportation for medical care.
As climate change made rains unpredictable in 2021 and the average temperatures rise, farmers were able to harvest enough crops to feed their families, make a little money and use the village saving groups as a way to send their children to school.
Project Summary
In the Lokori and Karenga subcounties of Kaabong District, Uganda, DADO prepares the farming community to cope with the impact of climate change through training on conservation agriculture, post harvest food preservation and village savings groups, especially for women and youth.
