Description
Teacher Margaret Aseera, leads her class of the youngest students at the P4T Primary School at the Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in western Uganda.
Personal/Project impact
Aseera and other caregivers will receive refresher classes three times a year on topics such best practices in ECD teaching with MCC funding. While the school was on lockdown, teachers also attended training on childhood trauma and keeping children safe at home and school. Teacher-student ratios were high in February 2022 because P4T lost some teachers during the COVID-19 lockdown. Also, extra classrooms are under construction. MCC is supporting the hiring of one teacher and furnishing one of the new classrooms.
Early childhood learners have a safe place to go each day, where they are experiencing nonviolent, kind caregivers while learning a basic English vocabulary and numbers and basic behavior expectations, such as sharing. Teachers are alert for signs of trauma in the children because of violence, which is common at home, and staff follows up as needed with the student and parent.
Project Summary
Planning for Tomorrow (P4T) is a nonprofit organization operating in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, Kikuube District, Uganda, offers early childhood development (ECD) classes from children ages 3 to 8 up to grade seven at two schools. Over the course of the project (2021-2024), MCC is supporting the early childhood development classes by providing a cleaner, safer environment (water, playground and desks), refresher training for teachers on best practices, and psychological support for children and parents who are traumatized.
