Personal/Project impact
Seventh graders Suzan Natyang, who would like to become a teacher, and Mary Timat, who would like to become a nurse, said they go to school to gain knowledge. Being a girl at a school, which has a majority of male students, is not always easy, they agreed, because sometimes the boys harass them. Other girls they know would like to be in school, but sometimes their parents need them to work at home or to earn money. Some parents lack school fees and some force their girls to marry to get the dowry.
Students from the IK ethnic group who received scholarships for secondary school are finishing their education and returning to the IK community, where they serve as role models and educational proponents, as well as serving as professionals in educational and health professions. Most are committed to helping their parents and younger siblings succeed. .Parent groups are holding group information sessions and mobilizing proponents of girls’ education to talk with families personally. As a result, MCC is trying to increase the number of girls who are educated through P-7, avoiding early marriage and reducing poverty. Schools are also offering menstruation pads to encourage teenage girls to come to school.
