Description
A bee hive at the DADO apiary project in Kachapangole, Uganda.
Personal/Project impact
Beekeepers work together to place bee hives in strategic places to keep wildlife, especially elephants, from destroying their homes and gardens. The bees will chase elephants back to a nearby game preserve by stinging them on their sensitive ears and trunk. Also, the beekeepers harvest the honey and use it for their families or sell it. DADO helps to provide the beehives and the men use traditional knowledge that has been passed down through the generations to know when and how to harvest the honey.
As climate change made rains unpredictable in 2021 and the average temperatures rise, farmers were able to harvest enough crops to feed their families, make a little money and use the village saving groups as a way to send their children to school.
Project Summary
In the Lokori and Karenga subcounties of Kaabong District, Uganda, DADO prepares the farming community to cope with the impact of climate change through training on conservation agriculture, post harvest food preservation and village savings groups, especially for women and youth.
