Description
Samson Dekeny shows his traditional granary in Kachapangole, Uganda.
Personal/Project impact
The granary, made of reeds, is lined with cow dung, which acts like clay to create an odor-free, hard covering protecting the stored seeds and grains from pests and insects, increasing the harvest yield.
As a lead farmer, Samson Dekeny has taken multiple agricultural-related trainings from DADO about how to protect his crops from climate change so he has enough food to support his family. In his fields, he implemented what he learned, including conservation agriculture, intercropping, increasing varieties of food, planting trees. Now he helps to teach other farmers. As a result, he can keep his six children in school and keep his family fed, for most of the year from what he grows.
As climate change made rains unpredictable in 2021 and the average temperatures rise, farmers were able to harvest enough crops to feed their families, make a little money and use the village saving groups as a way to send their children to school.
Project Summary
In the Lokori and Karenga subcounties of Kaabong District, Uganda, DADO prepares the farming community to cope with the impact of climate change through training on conservation agriculture, post harvest food preservation and village savings groups, especially for women and youth.
