Description
This drone footage, captured on July 28, 2022, in Elkhorn City, Kentucky, shows one section of the catastrophic flooding that spread across 13 counties in eastern Kentucky and damaged more than 15,000 homes. The flooded area was already economically distressed, and the recent flooding has forced many to be unable to financially recover.
The new Sharing With Appalachian People (SWAP) location will be based at Elkhorn Community Church in Elkhorn City, Kentucky, which is nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The new location is expected to accommodate up to 40 volunteers and will open in May 2023.
Personal/Project impact
In response to the catastrophic flooding in eastern Kentucky this summer, SWAP will be opening a new location in Pike County, Kentucky. Prior to the flooding, Pike County already was identified by the Appalachia Regional Commission as one of the most economically depressed counties in the nation.
By opening this new site location, SWAP will be able to serve some of the most vulnerable communities in Appalachia.
